| Reservoirs consequently allow us to achieve a balance between gas production and sales. During peak consumption periods additional gas is injected into the supply network, while excess quantities are absorbed during periods of reduced consumption. In this way we can ensure that there is always an adequate supply of natural gas.
The fact that the gas is injected and withdrawn from storage at all is due to the great fluctuations in consumption. In August the consumption of gas as a source of energy for space heating can drop to 10 % of its peak rate in January. Industrial requirements are also subject to fluctuation for reasons associated with the economy and production technology.
